Georgia inmate who stole $11 million escapes federal prison

Image
Arthur Lee Cofield Jr., a 34-year-old inmate who notoriously embezzled $11 million from a billionaire film producer while incarcerated in a maximum-security prison in Georgia, has escaped from federal custody.  Authorities have reported that Cofield walked away from a minimum-security satellite camp located next to the Federal Correctional Institution in Jesup, Georgia. Discovered missing from the FCI Jesup satellite camp. The Federal Bureau of Prisons has labeled him a "walkaway". He is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs around 210 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. The U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI are spearheading the manhunt. Prior to his transfer to federal custody, Cofield executed what investigators consider one of the most brazen and significant frauds ever carried out from an American prison. He assumed the identity of Hollywood producer Sidney Kimmel by utilizing smuggled contraband cell phones to impersonate the billionaire and gain access to his Charles Schw...

Italy cancels planned Kanye West and Travis Scott performances

Image
Italian authorities have officially prohibited Kanye West and Travis Scott from performing their consecutive shows in Reggio Emilia scheduled for July 2026 due to concerns regarding public order and safety.  This decision, made on May 29, 2026, prevents their headline performances at the newly rebranded Pulse of Gaia Festival. Prefect Salvatore Angieri mandated the cancellation after assessing joint security evaluations. The specific reasons for the government's intervention include: Severe Protest Risks: There are evident threats of local counter-demonstrations and social unrest triggered by the bookings. Massive Massing Concerns: It was anticipated that over 100,000 spectators would converge on the 103,000-capacity venue within a single 24-hour period. Back-to-Back Logistics: The close scheduling of the two large crowds posed unmanageable strain on local transit and containment. Previous European Blocks: Several European nations have already revoked West's performance clearan...

Arne Slot removed as Liverpool manager following Saturday announcement

Image
Liverpool dismissed manager Arne Slot on Saturday, indicating that the club was in search of a "change of direction" following a poor defense of their Premier League title. The Reds concluded the season in fifth place, trailing champions Arsenal by 25 points, despite investing a Premier League record of nearly £450 million ($605 million) on new signings in a single transfer window last year. Outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is the leading candidate after guiding the Cherries into Europe for the first time in the club's history. Just over a year ago, Slot was celebrated as a hero for taking on the challenging task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp and leading Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in his inaugural season. However, fans turned against the Dutchman this season following a string of uninspired performances. There were also indications of discord within the dressing room, particularly from Mohamed Salah, who called for a return to ...

Cambodia Says It Is Not Expelling African Nationals

Image
Cambodia's Ministry of Interior, along with its General Department of Immigration, has released official statements clarifying that a viral notice circulating on the internet—which falsely claimed that all African nationals must exit the country by May 31, 2026—is completely fabricated and untrue. The Viral Notice is Fabricated: Viral posts on social media alleged that Cambodia was terminating immigration waivers specifically for citizens from African countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda, with threats of severe fines and imprisonment. Authorities have confirmed that this document was forged to misrepresent facts and mislead public perception. Cambodian officials have stressed that the nation has never implemented any policy aimed at targeting or mandating the departure of African nationals. The kingdom remains open to all foreign nationals who adhere to its immigration regulations. The false rumors gained momentum against the backdrop of actual, widely reported law e...

WHO reports first patient recovered in DRC Ebola outbreak

Image
On Friday, the World Health Organization announced the first recovery of a confirmed Ebola patient amid the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. "The DRC has reported that on May 27, a patient recovered, left the hospital, and has been reintegrated into the community," stated Anais Legand from the WHO during a press briefing. She noted that this recovery is the "first" among patients confirmed to have Ebola, but emphasized her belief that there have likely been additional recoveries among individuals who have not yet received laboratory confirmation of their test results. "This is the first case" to be discharged from a care facility "after two negative tests," she added. Legand indicated that the WHO has recorded 17 confirmed and 223 suspected Ebola fatalities in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the outbreak was declared on May 15, with 125 confirmed cases and over 900 suspected cases. There is currently no vaccine or spec...

US announces sanctions against Iran over Strait of Hormuz

Image
On Wednesday, the United States Treasury declared sanctions against Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority, which is the new agency in Tehran responsible for collecting fees for passage through the crucial Strait of Hormuz.  Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remarked in a statement, "The Iranian military’s recent effort to extort global maritime trade demonstrates that Economic Fury has left the regime in dire need of funds." The statement broadened the scope of sanctions to include anyone who pays these fees, as they "may be providing support to and receiving services from" Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, thus potentially facing "sanctions risk." Bessent further stated, "Treasury has cut off the Iranian regime's revenue streams for their weapons programs, terrorist proxies, and nuclear aspirations." According to the statement, the US has effectively disrupted "tens of billions of dollars’ worth of revenue from being accessible" to Tehr...

Rayo Vallecano Fall as Crystal Palace Secure First-Ever UEFA Europa Conference League Trophy

Image
Crystal Palace secured their inaugural European trophy by overcoming Spain's Rayo Vallecano with a score of 1-0 in the 2026 UEFA Conference League final. This historic victory occurred on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the Red Bull Arena located in Leipzig, Germany.  It represented a significant milestone for the South London club during their first season participating in a major UEFA tournament. After a cautious and highly strategic first half that resulted in a 0-0 stalemate, the match came alive shortly after the break. In the 51st minute, England midfielder Adam Wharton surged forward and unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area.  Rayo Vallecano's goalkeeper, Augusto Batalla, was able to deflect the initial attempt, but French forward Jean-Philippe Mateta displayed remarkable striker's instinct to capitalize on the rebound and score. This solitary goal was enough, as Palace's resolute defense, led by Maxence Lacroix, restricted the Spanish team to o...

World Bank Confirms It Did Not Refuse a Loan to Nigeria

Image
The World Bank has not refused a loan to Nigeria; instead, the Federal Government of Nigeria and the World Bank have mutually decided to cancel $717.7 million in unutilized funding from a power sector reform initiative. This joint cancellation has ignited a surge of public speculation, with some citizens perceiving it as a denial of a loan or a suspension of the program.  The cancellation effectively concludes the undisbursed segment of a $1.52 billion facility that was initially intended for the Power Sector Recovery Performance-Based Operation (PSRO). Nigeria formally requested the cancellation of the unused balance on March 26, 2026.  The restructuring of the program was initiated because the project did not achieve essential global indicators and reform milestones. A significant depreciation of the Nigerian Naira has increased the cost of natural gas, which supplies over 70% of Nigeria's national grid, disrupting the program's original financial framework. The progr...

According to military intelligence, remnants of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) aim to take advantage of the festive season by deploying suicide bombers and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), with a particular focus on densely populated civilian areas. The Theatre Command, under the leadership of spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, has significantly forward-deployed troops and activated surveillance resources across vulnerable regions, while issuing the following mandatory safety guidelines to the public:  Critical Safety Advisories Localize Festivities: Hold Eid prayers and celebrations as close to your residence and familiar neighborhood as possible, steering clear of lar...

USA, Iran near agreement to end war — Trump

Image
On Sunday, the United States and Iran aimed to finalize an agreement to officially conclude the Middle East conflict, following Donald Trump's statement that a proposal, which included the opening of the blockaded Strait of Hormuz, was "largely negotiated".  Nevertheless, the US president underscored that the agreement remained "subject to finalization", while the New York Times indicated that contentious issues regarding Iran's nuclear program would only be addressed after an initial pact was established. "An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and various other Countries," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Saturday. "In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened," he stated, a development that would alleviate pressures on global energy markets following a prolonged Iranian blockade of thi...

US Tells Aspiring Green-Card Holders to Apply Outside the Country

Image
The Trump administration has introduced a comprehensive new policy mandating that the majority of temporary visa holders must exit the United States and apply for their green cards from outside the country. This policy directive, revealed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), directs agency officials to regard domestic "adjustment of status" applications as an "extraordinary form of relief".  This represents a significant disruption to a 60-year-old immigration system. Foreign nationals currently present in the U.S. on temporary visas (including students, tech workers, or tourists) are required to return to their home nations and complete the permanent residency process via consular processing. However, foreigners will only be allowed to adjust their status from within the U.S. if they can demonstrate exceptional, individualized hardship. Initial statements from USCIS suggest that those whose applications yield an "economic benefit" or alig...

Ebola outbreak in Congo: WHO chief warns of ‘very high’ risk

Image
The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially raised the public health risk level of the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from "high" to "very high" at the national level. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the virus is "spreading rapidly," while also indicating that the regional risk remains high and the global risk is low.  Currently, there are 82 laboratory-confirmed cases and 7 confirmed fatalities. Due to delays in surveillance, officials believe the actual scale of the outbreak is significantly larger, with nearly 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths. The situation in the neighboring country of Uganda is presently stable, with 2 confirmed cases and 1 death associated with individuals who traveled from the DRC. This particular outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. Unlike more prevalent strains, there are no approved vaccines or specific treatment...

Rubio warns Cuba after US indicts former leader

Image
On Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned Cuba that the United States is intensely focused on altering the communist regime, following the island's shock at a US indictment against its former president, Raul Castro.  The US military reported that the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier, along with its escort warships, had entered the Caribbean. When President Donald Trump was asked if this deployment was intended to intimidate Cuba, he responded, "No, not at all." Rubio, a Cuban American and a vocal critic of the government in Havana, characterized the island, located 90 miles (145 kilometers) from the US coast, as a "failed state" grappling with a significant economic crisis. He stated, "Their economic system is ineffective. It is broken, and it cannot be repaired under the current political system in place," while speaking to reporters in Miami. "What they have become accustomed to over the years is merely buying time and waiting us out. T...

China Demands U.S. Halt Threats of Judicial Action Targeting Cuba

Image
China has denounced the United States following the federal indictment of 94-year-old former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, insisting that Washington cease "brandishing the judicial stick" and imposing coercive sanctions against Havana. The diplomatic conflict intensified after the U.S. Department of Justice revealed criminal murder and conspiracy charges against Castro. This case originates from the 1996 downing of two civilian aircraft operated by the Miami-based exile group Brothers to the Rescue, which led to four fatalities.   During a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun articulated China's opposition to the legal and economic tactics:  China explicitly rejects what it terms the "abuse of judicial means" and the weaponization of domestic courts against foreign nations.  The ministry asserted that the U.S. must cease its "barbaric blockade" and unilateral economic sanctions, which lack authorization from the Unite...

The United States has filed murder charges against Cuba's Raúl Castro in connection with the 1996 downing of two aircraft.

Image
The United States Department of Justice has made public a federal grand jury indictment against 94-year-old former Cuban President Raúl Castro and five other individuals, charging them with authorizing the deadly shoot-down of two unarmed civilian planes operated by the exile group Brothers to the Rescue in 1996. On February 24, 1996, Cuban MiG fighter jets, commanded by the armed forces, intercepted and launched missiles at two civilian aircraft that were flying in international airspace. This assault resulted in the deaths of four individuals on board, three of whom were U.S. citizens: Carlos Costa, Armando Alejandre Jr., Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales.  Castro is facing the same charges as outlined, along with five co-defendants:  Conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals  Destruction of aircraft (two counts) Murder (four individual counts—one for each victim) Although the U.S. has successfully unsealed this superseding indictment, former leader Raúl Castro remains...
