MOHBAD'S DEATH : Sam Larry in our custody – Police

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that music promoter, Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry, is now in its custody as the probe of Afrobeats singer Mohbad’s death continues. This was made known by the Nigerian Police Public Relations Officer SP Benjamin Hundeyin via his X account on Thursday. “Balogun Olamilekan Eletu aka Sam Larry is now in our custody. He is currently assisting with ongoing investigation,” Hundeyin said. The development comes less than 24 hours after Naira Marley said he was willing to fly back to Nigeria for investigation. According to the statement, Naira Marley said all manner of stories had been peddled against him in respect of the death of Mohbad, whose real name is Ilerioluwa Aloba. Since the news of Mohbad’s passing, public attention has turned to Larry as the subject of old social media posts by the late singer which have raised concerns. Naira Marley Denies Allegations, “I am not a drug lord"

  Nigerian musician, Naira Marley, has denied being a drug lord, contending that he does not belong to a cult. Mr Azeez Fashola, known also as Naira Marley  said this in a statement on Tuesday, in the mist of theory connecting him to the death of Afrobeats musician Ilerioluwa Aloba (Mohbad). Mohbad died on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. Following his death, there have been allegations that he was assaulted by Naira Marley and his crew. But in the statement, the singer said he did not torture nor attack the late Peace crooner contrary to speculations, debunking reports that belongs to a cult group. “The rumours regarding the label being a drug cartel are untrue. Mohbad: House of Reps observe moment of silence, promise to monitor probe

The House of Representatives on Tuesday observed a moment of silence for the late Afrobeats singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, better known as Mohbad, who died two weeks ago aged 27. The lower chamber paid the tribute at the beginning of an executive session at the resumption of plenary in Abuja. Following a motion of urgent importance by the member representing the Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Mr Babajimi Benson, the House further resolved to monitor the investigation surrounding his death and royalties accruing to him. Benson called for a review of relevant laws guiding the entertainment industry as well as copyright laws, while expressing concerns about the contracts and agreements that entertainers are compelled to sign.  

NIGERIA: Tribunal strikes out Rhodes-Vivour, LP from Jandor’s petition over Lagos Gov Election

The Lagos State Governorship Election Tribunal has struck out the Labour Party and its candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, from the petition of his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart, Olajide Adediran popularly known as Jandor, against the recent governorship election. Jandor is challenging the return of Babajide SanwoOlu and Obafemi Hamzat in the March 18 governorship election in Lagos State. Shortly after the announcement of appearances by all lawyers and parties in the case at Monday’s proceeding, the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Arum Ashom, announced that the court would first deliver judgment in the case of the PDP & its candidate before giving its judgment in the petition of the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour. NIGERIA: Atiku & Obi files appeal at Supreme Court, seeks nullification of judgment

  The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court, seeking nullification of the judgment of the Presidential Election Petitions Court, which upheld the declaration of President Bola Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 polls. In the notice of appeal predicated on 35 grounds, Atiku insisted that the tribunal committed a grave error and miscarriage of justice in its findings and conclusion in its petition challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s declaration of Tinubu as President. The notice of appeal is also praying the apex court to set aside the whole findings and conclusions of the Tribunal on the grounds that they did not represent the true picture of the grounds of his petition. UK Jack up Student Visa Fee to £490, £115 For Visit Visa

  Authority of the United Kingdom has publicized an increase in the cost of student and tourist visas. In a statement published by the UK’s Home Office on Friday, the fee for a student visa has been increased from £127 to £490, while the cost of a visit visa for less than six months will increase from £15 to £115. According to the Home Office, the increases followed a legislation that was laid by the Parliament on Friday. It noted that the fees hike will enable the government to pay for vital services and allow more funding to be prioritized for public sector. The statement added that income from fees charged plays a vital role in the Home Office’s ability to run a sustainable immigration and nationality system. The changes come less than six months after the UK announced increments in the cost of visa applications and health surcharges. Five dead, 12 injured in multiple crashes on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

  Five persons gave up the ghost while 12 others were injured in multiple crashes on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. It was reported that the accident happened in the early hours of Sunday around the Four Square Camp in Ajebo, a village in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state. The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident in a statement. FSRC spokesman in the state, Florence Okpe, said a total of 21 persons were involved in the multiple crashes. “The FRSC Ogunmakin unit Command carried out a rescue operation at the early hours of Sunday morning at about 0615 hrs on Lagos-Ibadan expressway a few meters before Foursquare camp and the rescue operation were done with the help of the Nigeria Police,” she stated. The multiple crashes involved three vehicles with registration numbers KMC- 810ZB a DAF truck, TMA- 244XA a Toyota bus and a Mitsubishi pickup with no registration number on it.   Nigeria's electricity distribution companies reported "a total system collapse" on Thursday after the national electricity grid outwardly collapsed early Thursday morning. The grid collapse has resulted in a massive loss of supply to power distributors nationwide. Some electricity distribution companies confirmed the development with a statement on Thursday morning. NLC begins warning strike over fuel subsidy removal

  The Nigeria Labour Congres (NLC) has commenced a two-day warning strike in protest against the Federal Government’s failure to address the problems caused by the removal of fuel subsidies. This comes days after the declaration by the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, last Friday. President Bola Tinubu announced in his inaugural speech on May 29 that “fuel subsidy is gone“, which has since led to fuel prices as much as tripling nationwide and a rising cost of living. The labour union is accusing the Federal Government of abandoning the negotiations and failing to implement some of the resolutions from previous meetings with the government. On August 2, organised labour protested what it described as the anti-people policies of the administration of President Bola Tinubu. JUST IN: Presidential tribunal to deliver judgement September 6

  The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal will on Wednesday, September 6 deliver judgement in the three petitions challenging the declaration of President Bola Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential election. Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Umar Mohammed Bangari confirmed the date this morning in Abuja. Bangari said that everything has been put in place to ensure hitch free delivery of the judgment in the three petitions.   The petitions before the tribunal are the ones filed by the Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, Abubakar Atiku and his counterpart in the Labour Party Peter Obi as well as that of Allied People Movement APC. Bangari articulated that adequate security has been put in place and that only the invited members of political parties and the general public would be allowed into the court room to avoid congestion and security breaches.

  President Bola Tinubu has recalled the country’s ambassadors, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said. This is according to a statement by Alkasim Abdulkadir, the Special Assistant on Media and Communication Strategy to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar. “Sequel to the inquiries on the letter recalling the Nigerian ambassador to the UK the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar has reaffirmed that all career ambassadors and non-career ambassadors have been recalled on the instructions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ambassadors as representatives of the country they serve at the behest of the president and it’s his prerogative to send or recall them from any country,” the statement read.
