$498.8M Committed to Africa’s Fight Against Ebola

Africa has secured around $498.8 million in pledges and commitments aimed at enhancing response efforts against the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola Virus outbreak in affected and high-risk nations.

This information was revealed by Jean Kaseya, the Director General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, on Monday, May 26, 2026, via a post shared on X. Kaseya emphasized that Africa is united in its fight against the Bundibugyo Ebola Virus outbreak, with governments and development partners collaborating to mobilize the necessary funding to bolster response operations across the continent.

"Today, during the High-Level Ministerial Meeting, governments and partners announced approximately US$498.8 million in pledges and commitments to enhance response efforts in affected and high-risk countries." He characterized these commitments as a powerful indication of African solidarity, leadership, and collective responsibility in protecting the continent’s health security.

Kaseya further highlighted that as the outbreak continues to develop in a complex environment, trust, coordination, and swift response efforts are essential to halting transmission and preserving lives. According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, the death toll associated with the Bundibugyo Ebola Virus has increased to 220, with Ghebreyesus noting that "currently, the epidemic is outpacing us."
The Bundibugyo strain that is currently driving the outbreak lacks an approved vaccine or targeted treatment.
