USA, Iran near agreement to end war — Trump

On Sunday, the United States and Iran aimed to finalize an agreement to officially conclude the Middle East conflict, following Donald Trump's statement that a proposal, which included the opening of the blockaded Strait of Hormuz, was "largely negotiated".

Nevertheless, the US president underscored that the agreement remained "subject to finalization", while the New York Times indicated that contentious issues regarding Iran's nuclear program would only be addressed after an initial pact was established.

"An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and various other Countries," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Saturday. "In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened," he stated, a development that would alleviate pressures on global energy markets following a prolonged Iranian blockade of this vital route for oil shipments.

Leaders from Middle Eastern nations, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain, along with representatives from Turkey and Pakistan, participated in a call with Trump to deliberate on the agreement on Saturday, according to the US president. Pakistan, which facilitated historic in-person negotiations between US and Iranian delegations in April, expressed its desire to host another round of discussions "very soon," as stated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

He noted that Pakistan's influential army chief, Asim Munir, who visited Tehran on Friday, also took part in the call, which "provided a useful opportunity to exchange views on… how to advance the ongoing peace efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region.

" Trump remarked that a separate conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "went very well." The US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28 ignited the conflict, which continued for weeks before a temporary ceasefire was implemented in April.

"Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly," Trump stated, without offering further specifics.

According to a report by The New York Times, which referenced unnamed American officials, it was stated that the specifics of an "alleged commitment" from Tehran to relinquish its stockpile of highly enriched uranium would be addressed following the establishment of the initial agreement.
