Trump vows no new Iran strike prior to US midterm elections

President Donald Trump declared a temporary suspension of military operations targeting Iran, explicitly excluding any fresh strikes before the November 3, 2026 U.S. midterm elections. Through a Truth Social post, Trump attributed this pause to "productive discussions" with Tehran.

Trump made clear that although the U.S.-led economic blockade on Iran continues unabated, military strikes will be withheld until after the midterms. He reinforced his commitment, declaring, "IRAN WILL NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!"

The announcement promptly calmed international energy markets. Before his statement, crude oil had climbed more than 5% following reports from Washington and New York news organizations suggesting the White House was seeking Pentagon strike plans to strengthen Republican electoral performance. Following his clarification, oil prices declined.

This temporary halt emerges approximately eight months into an extended conflict that started with coordinated U.S. and Israeli military strikes in late February, which significantly disrupted commerce via the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Notwithstanding the pre-election pause, New York media reports reveal that Trump rejected Iran's proposed seven-day ceasefire proposal, informing advisors he intends to restart U.S. bombing operations following the November midterms.

Stock markets surged Friday as U.S. President Donald Trump eliminated the possibility of striking Iran before midterm elections, simultaneously announcing that Russian diesel supplies would enter global markets following negotiations with Moscow's Vladimir Putin.
