Polish Head of State Redirects Flight Amid Confrontation With Courts
Reports emerged on Polish media outlets, including TV Republika, suggesting that the Polish military declined an order to prevent President Karol Nawrocki’s aircraft from accessing the military section of Warsaw’s airport.
These unverified media reports claim that an unidentified authority sought to ground or redirect the presidential aircraft amid a serious constitutional crisis involving the nation’s highest court, but the armed forces opted to ensure the head of state’s access.
This incident unfolded during a growing political standoff between Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s administration and the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, which escalated into open conflict.
On the evening of Friday, October 30, 2026, Constitutional Tribunal judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska issued an order suspending the court's President, Bogdan Święczkowski (a PiS appointee), along with his deputy for one month, asserting temporary control over the tribunal.
President Nawrocki, a PiS ally elected in 2025, was en route to Senegal to participate in the Summer Youth Olympic Games when PiS leadership urged him to return. He aborted the trip, stating on X that "at such a moment, the president must be in Poland."
Upon landing, Nawrocki pushed through police presence to enter the Constitutional Tribunal around 1:00 AM, where he confronted Korwin-Piotrowska directly, telling her and other government-aligned figures that they were "not judges of the Constitutional Tribunal."
Riot police were deployed around the court grounds in Warsaw as hundreds of PiS supporters gathered to protest the ouster. Clashes ensued, leading to the detention of three individuals after objects were hurled at officers. PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński, who attempted to force his way into the building, accused Tusk of orchestrating a "coup" and transforming Poland into a "police state."
The Tribunal's official social media channels, still under the control of the previous leadership, similarly described the suspension as an unlawful "coup d'état."
On Saturday, October 31, 2026, President Nawrocki convened emergency discussions with parliamentary leaders at the Presidential Palace, citing a "threat to internal security." While some members of the conservative coalition, including Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, participated to address state security, Tusk’s Civic Coalition and left-wing party factions opted to boycott the meeting, perceiving the president as a participant in the ongoing dispute.
International allies are closely monitoring the situation; U.S. Ambassador to Poland, Tom Rose, released a statement urging all parties to refrain from actions that could lead to further escalation or violence.
