Police identify suspect in mass shooting at Grand Blanc Township church

Police have identified the Michigan church shooter as Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old from Burton, Michigan. The attack took place on Sunday, September 28, 2025, during a service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township. Sanford was killed in a shootout with officers after the incident.

Sanford is believed to have driven his pickup truck into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Police said he then got out of the truck and started firing shots from an assault rifle.

Police said the shooting happened at 10:25 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 4200 block of McCandlish Road in Grand Blanc Township.

Police said at 1 p.m. Sunday that 10 people from the church had been taken to nearby hospitals.

Two of those people have been pronounced dead. The second person who died was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds at a hospital.

Police said they are still early in the investigation, and they are working to try to figure out Sanford’s motive.

They’re searching his home in Burton. They also said they will go through his cellphone records.

A third update from police is expected at 8 p.m. Sunday.

The FBI sent 100 agents to the scene to help authorities interview the many witnesses who were at the church.

Authorities believe that Sanford acted alone, and they have no other suspects.They said there is no further danger to the public.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this incident, which was completely unnecessary and avoidable,”  Police Chief, William Renye said.

Local 4’s Nick Monacelli confirmed that three IEDs were found inside Sanford’s pickup truck during the police investigation.

My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. I am grateful to the first responders who took action quickly. We will continue to monitor this situation and hold the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc close.

According to military records, Sanford was a Marine Corps veteran who was deployed to Iraq from 2007 to 2008.

Trump signs executive order targeting ticket price reselling

  President Trump signed an executive order targeting the ticket reselling industry during a signing ceremony from the White House. The new order will allow the Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission to go after the reselling industry, which has used computer bots and algorithms to buy large blocks of tickets and resell them at extremely higher prices.  Musician Kid Rock, who also appeared at the Republican National Convention last July, was present at the signing in the Oval Office.  The president also took several questions from the press, including on the possibility of additional sanctions on Russia, immigration, and tariffs. “I’ve spoken to him over the years about it and it bothers him,” Trump said about Kid Rock during the executive order’s signing. “It bothers a lot of other artists.
