West Bank city faces demolitions by Israeli forces after shooting kills two soldiers
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a "complete lockdown" of the occupied West Bank in response to a tragic shooting incident near a checkpoint in Hebron.
On the morning of October 23, 2026, two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on an Israeli military checkpoint near Hebron, resulting in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers and injuries to three others. During a 20-minute firefight, Israeli forces fatally shot both attackers.
Following this confrontation, Netanyahu instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to implement a "full siege" around Hebron and establish a security perimeter around the city. He also directed security personnel to prepare for an extensive closure throughout the entire West Bank beginning Friday.
Netanyahu stated that the gunmen—whom he attributed to Hamas—were allegedly preparing a significantly larger attack intended to harm civilians, pointing to a substantial quantity of weapons and ammunition recovered from their vehicle. Netanyahu announced that forces would conduct thorough searches of homes to dismantle terrorist infrastructure and demolish residences in the attackers' neighborhood.
This escalation takes place merely days before Israel's scheduled national election on October 27, 2026, during a period of intensified regional instability and persistent conflict.
