Teenager Kills Three Children and a Teacher at Bend Elementary in Oregon .

A devastating tragedy unfolded on Thursday, October 15, 2026, when a 16-year-old gunman tragically took the lives of four individuals—three young children and a dedicated teacher—at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. The children who lost their lives were just 5, 8, and 11 years old.

The young suspect was ultimately stopped and killed at the scene by a courageous armed community member who bravely pursued him into the building to protect others.

At approximately 12:59 p.m., the shooter first opened fire on someone in a vehicle outside the school before using a pump-action shotgun to force his way through the school's locked doors.
Authorities discovered that the long gun used in this heartbreaking attack had been purchased by the suspect's mother. Additionally, a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher sustained critical injuries and were immediately transported to St. Charles Medical Center.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed her gratitude to the civilian hero whose quick action helped prevent additional casualties. In response to this tragedy, all 32 schools in the Bend-La Pine district suspended classes and extracurricular activities on Friday, while the community came together for a candlelight vigil held at Drake Park to honor those lost.

Gun violence remains a complex challenge across Oregon, encompassing a troubling history of school and community mass shootings, elevated rates of firearm-related suicides in rural communities, and concentrated urban gun violence primarily affecting the Portland metropolitan area.

Between 2014 and September 2026, Oregon experienced 32 mass shootings that claimed 53 lives and left 113 people injured.
