Delta to delay planned flight from Atlanta to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia until March 2027
Delta Air Lines has officially postponed its highly anticipated nonstop service connecting Atlanta (ATL) and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (RUH) until March 2027. This decision comes in response to a devastating weekend assault involving missiles and drones launched by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi militants against Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, resulting in at least 12 fatalities, hundreds of injuries, and a temporary shutdown of airport operations.
The eagerly promoted route—which would establish Delta as the sole U.S. airline providing direct flights to the Kingdom—was initially set to launch later this month on October 23, 2026. The service launch has now been rescheduled to March 2027.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has released guidance directing U.S. airlines to "proceed with heightened caution" at all flight levels when traveling to or across Saudi Arabian airspace due to active military operations and potential navigation risks. This advisory remains active through December 10, 2026.
Simultaneously, numerous international carriers—such as Lufthansa, KLM, Air India, and various Gulf-region airlines—have also cancelled or delayed their planned Saudi Arabia flights following the airport attacks.
Delta emphasizes that Saudi Arabia continues to represent a vital market for future expansion and is collaborating with government officials and regional aviation partners including Saudia and Riyadh Air.
Passengers holding reservations for this route can access the My Trips section on the Delta Air Lines Official Website to explore available alternatives, including the option of receiving complete refunds.
