US, Denmark and Greenland Reach Security Agreement During UNGA

 

On September 22, 2026, Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen came together at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City to sign a groundbreaking trilateral security agreement. 

This landmark pact successfully resolves months of heated diplomatic tensions surrounding the Arctic territory, simultaneously bolstering U.S. military capabilities while firmly upholding Danish sovereignty and Greenland's autonomy.

Building upon the foundational 1951 defense treaty, this newly inked agreement establishes comprehensive frameworks for sustained Arctic defense collaboration.

The agreement enables the U.S. to construct military installations at Narsarsuaq in the south and Mestersvig on the east coast, alongside enhanced operations at the current Pituffik Space Base.

It grants American military aircraft, ships, and personnel expansive freedom of movement and underwater access throughout Greenland's territory and waters. It prevents non-NATO nations from establishing manned or unmanned military bases or maintaining ongoing military operations without complete consensus.

It limits foreign capital flows into vital sectors like infrastructure and resource development, excluding entities beyond NATO, NATO allies, and EU members. It incorporates a Future Independence Clause guaranteeing the agreement's full force and effect should Greenland ever achieve independent statehood.

Yet the agreement's reception across America reveals sharp partisan divisions.

While proponents celebrate it as a transformative diplomatic achievement, skeptics and international relations experts contend it essentially repackages existing arrangements with fresh branding. 

Conservative leaders and agreement backers have enthusiastically hailed the deal as a landmark national security accomplishment.
