Lagos, Nigeria: FG and Labour Agree Two-Week Review of King’s College Concession

The Federal Government and organised labour have reached an agreement to conduct a two-week examination of the King's College, Lagos concession arrangement in response to concerns regarding the proposed Public-Private Partnership (PPP). 

The discussion, presided over by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, included participation from the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, and the Acting Permanent Secretary, Dr Folake Olatunji David. This agreement emerged following an urgent high-level consultation between the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) and its affiliated organisation, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), with the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.

Following this consultation, ASCSN declared the cessation of its industrial action regarding apprehensions about the proposed concession framework and instructed personnel in Federal Unity Colleges across the nation to return to their regular responsibilities. ASCSN National President, Shehu Mohammed, and Secretary-General, Joshua Apebo, endorsed the statement declaring the suspension of industrial action. A significant outcome of the consultation was the formation of a seven-member Joint Review Committee comprising representatives from labour organisations and other relevant parties.
The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) announced that the decision to halt industrial action was made in accordance with established collective bargaining protocols and in acknowledgment of concessions extended by the Federal Government.

Nevertheless, the union communicated that the suspension remained conditional in nature, indicating its readiness to reinstate industrial action without advance notification should the Joint Review Committee prove unable to address the grievances articulated by labour representatives. The association directed its chapter and unit leadership to maintain heightened vigilance and systematically track developments as the committee commences its operational mandate.

The Ministry further clarified that the Federal Government would maintain complete legal ownership and administrative oversight of King's College, with public access to the institution remaining consistent with prevailing Federal Government policy.
Regarding tuition fees, the Ministry provided assurance to labour that fee adjustments would not occur beyond the parameters of the Federal Government's policy framework on cost-effective education applicable to Federal Unity Schools.
