Governor Kemp orders 30-day pause on state fuel tax

Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia respectfully issued an executive order on Monday, September 28, 2026, establishing a suspension of the state's motor fuel excise tax for a 30-day period. The tax suspension commences at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, and is anticipated to conclude on October 29, 2026.

This initiative has been undertaken to address the considerable increases in fuel prices resulting from international market uncertainties and the ongoing regional conflict involving Iran. Prior to this executive action, Georgia's average price for regular gasoline had climbed to $4.19 per gallon.

Gasoline Tax Relief: The measure temporarily suspends the 33.3-cent-per-gallon state tax on regular gasoline. 

Diesel Tax Relief: The order likewise temporarily suspends the 37.3-cent-per-gallon state tax on diesel fuel, thereby extending support to agricultural producers and commercial transportation operators. 

Commercial Vehicle Waivers: The executive order provisionally removes weight restrictions on commercial vehicles to facilitate reduced supply chain expenses and delivery costs for retail establishments and enterprises.

It is noteworthy that Republican perspectives regarding gas tax relief measures anticipated for 2026 demonstrate considerable divergence, according to reporting by a news organization, with certain prominent individuals advocating for temporary suspensions while members of Congress express concerns regarding the implications for infrastructure funding.
