Coroner Finds Hayden Panettiere Died of Accidental Overdose Involving Fentanyl

Actor Hayden Panettiere died from an accidental overdose of fentanyl and several prescription drugs, the Greenville County Coroner's Office in South Carolina confirmed on September 22, 2026.

The 36-year-old star of "Heroes" and "Nashville" was found unresponsive at an apartment in Greenville on August 16, 2026. An autopsy revealed no signs of physical trauma that contributed to her death.

According to the statement released by the Greenville County Coroner's Office, the official cause of death was attributed to the toxic effects of multiple substances from Fentanyl, Alprazolam and Methocarbamol  known as Seroquel, an atypical antipsychotic medication.

Federal and local authorities, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), have active cross-country investigations underway to trace the origin of the drugs found in her system, examining whether the substances came from South Carolina or California.

Law enforcement reports noted that Panettiere had recently spent time in a rehabilitation facility prior to her passing, and she had previously been open with the public regarding her personal battles with addiction.
