37 Suspected Illegal Miners Die While Held by Authorities in Northwest Nigeria.

Thirty-seven individuals suspected of illegal mining tragically lost their lives while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State, Nigeria, during September 2026, following a comprehensive detention operation.

These heartbreaking deaths occurred shortly after security personnel conducted a two-day enforcement action targeting unauthorized mining activities, during which numerous individuals were apprehended. Although civil defense officials initially attributed the devastating loss to a sudden health crisis, investigative reports and accounts from survivors suggest that severe overcrowding combined with inadequate ventilation within the detention facility may have led to asphyxiation among the detainees. 

The tragedy sparked understandable community outrage, with residents of Minna, the state capital, taking to the streets in protest. In response, the state governor declared a three-day period of mourning, initiated disciplinary action against a local NSCDC commander, and authorized a comprehensive police investigation. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) explained that the suspects were apprehended on Tuesday and Wednesday, then discovered unresponsive on Thursday morning, attributing their deaths to an unidentified illness. Survivor Dauda Shehu shared with journalists that approximately 65 men were confined to a single cramped cell with virtually no air circulation, which created a desperate situation where panic and mass suffocation occurred as oxygen became critically scarce. Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State expressed deep sorrow over the incident, ordered an immediate and thorough investigation, and took the step of detaining a commanding officer pending the completion of autopsies and medical evaluations.

Families who lost loved ones have understandably questioned the official account of illness, with some expressing their belief that custody guards may have been responsible for the deaths. Heartbroken mothers have made emotional pleas to the federal government, hoping for their intervention and justice for their families.
