Trump Orders Blockade of Strait of Hormuz After US-Iran Peace Talks Collapse

President Donald Trump has directed the U.S. Navy to initiate a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, starting on April 13, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. ET (1400 GMT).

This directive came after the breakdown of critical peace negotiations between U.S. and Iranian representatives in Islamabad, Pakistan, which concluded on April 12 after over 21 hours of discussions.

The blockade is a reaction to what the Trump administration characterized as Iran's "unyielding" refusal to relinquish its nuclear aspirations and its "extortion" of global shipping through the enforcement of unlawful tolls.

Enforcement: U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the U.S. Navy will impartially intercept all maritime traffic entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal regions.

CENTCOM specified that the blockade will not obstruct vessels passing through the Strait to or from non-Iranian ports, including those in neighboring Gulf states. President Trump explicitly instructed the Navy to identify and intercept any vessel in international waters that has paid a "toll" to Iran for passage.

The U.S. military is also taking steps to eliminate mines reportedly placed by Iran in the waterway to guarantee a secure route for international tankers.
The discussions in Islamabad were led by Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf—the highest-level direct engagement between the two countries since the 1979 revolution.

Negotiations collapsed mainly due to Iran's unwillingness to offer an "affirmative commitment" to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
Iranian officials attributed the failure to "unreasonable" and "excessive" U.S. demands, while Vance asserted that the U.S. had presented its "final and best offer".

Global oil markets responded swiftly, with Brent crude prices rising back above $100 per barrel following the announcement.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) cautioned that any military vessel approaching the Strait would be deemed in violation of the existing ceasefire and would be "dealt with severely".

Trump proposed that other nations, such as the U.K., could contribute to the blockade effort. However, reports suggest that the U.K. government has stated it will not take part in the blockade directly.
