Anthony Joshua crash: Driver charged with no valid license; trial adjourned to June 2, 2026.
The Ogun Magistrate’s Court 1, located in Sagamu within the Sagamu Local Government Area of the state, and overseen by Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun, has postponed the trial of the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the road accident with former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua to June 2, 2026.This marks approximately the fourth occasion the case has been postponed to permit the prosecuting team to submit a new charge to the existing information regarding the case.
The defendant, Adeniyi Mobolaji, faces four charges, which include accusations of dangerous driving resulting in death. Mobolaji is also charged with reckless and negligent driving, in violation of Section 6(1) of the same Act, as well as driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm, and property damage, contrary to Section 7(1) of the Act.
Additionally, he is accused of operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s license, in violation of Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act. In her ruling on the prosecution counsel G. O. Ogunyomi's request for an adjournment, the presiding magistrate, Olufunilayo Somefun, rescheduled the case for June 2 for a proper hearing, a decision that was not contested by the defense counsel.
Following the proceedings, the defendant's counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, stated that this development aims to ensure justice for all parties involved in the case. The 46-year-old driver was implicated in the tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, along the heavily trafficked Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on December 29, 2025.
The Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck, leaving both Joshua and the driver with minor injuries. The boxing champion was subsequently discharged from the hospital after being assessed as clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
The passing of Ghami and Ayodele has reverberated throughout the international boxing community. The deceased individuals were widely recognized as pivotal figures within Joshua’s team.
