ICE Agents observed at Atlanta airport amid shutdown
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were deployed to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport today, Monday, March 23, 2026.
The agents were sent to assist with security line management due to severe staffing shortages at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). These shortages are a result of an ongoing partial government shutdown, which has led to high rates of TSA employee call-outs.
Officials and news reports indicate the agents are primarily there for crowd control and to help organize the massive lines. They are not performing specialized TSA screening duties or checking in passengers.
Agents have been spotted near the entrance of the North Terminal and on balconies overlooking the security checkpoints.
Despite the extra help, wait times at the airport have reportedly exceeded three hours, with lines stretching outside the terminal doors and into the baggage claim areas.
Atlanta is one of 13 airports across the country receiving federal agents to supplement TSA operations during this period.
While the City of Atlanta is also providing support like meal vouchers and parking for unpaid TSA workers, local officials have clarified that the Atlanta Police Department is not involved in these federal enforcement actions.
