UK backs Nigeria’s peace push

Dr. Richard Montgomery - British High Commissioner to Nigeria
The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability, primarily through the launch of the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) programme in January 2026.

Key components of this support include:

The SPRiNG Initiative: A four-year (2024–2028) UK-funded programme designed to bolster institutional capacity for conflict management and response. It specifically targets northern Nigeria to address the intersection of conflict and climate-related pressures.

Strategic Security Partnership: The partnership, underscored by British High Commissioner Dr. Richard Montgomery, focuses on counter-terrorism, border security, and tackling hybrid threats like disinformation.

Regional Leadership: The UK recognizes Nigeria as a pivotal actor for West African and Sahel stability, pledging support for its leadership role within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Humanitarian and Technical Aid: Ongoing support includes a £45 million humanitarian package focused on food security and malnutrition in the northeast, alongside technical assistance for police reforms and civil-military coordination.

This backing aligns with the Third UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue held in late 2025, which established new frameworks for cooperation on cyber-crime, human rights, and military operational planning.
