Nnamdi Kanu’s trial resumes at High Court in Abuja

The trial of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) Mister Nnamdi Kanu has resumed at the Federal High Court in Abuja before Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako. The Federal Government had filed an amended 15-count charge of terrorism and treasonable felony against Mister Kanu in 2021.

At the resumed court session on Monday, new lawyers announced appearances for parties in the suit.  Mike Ozekhome, who was formerly the senior counsel representing Kanu, has been replaced by Emeka Ejiofor, while the prosecuting team is being led by Adegboyega Awomolo who replaced David Kaswe, a lawyer with the federal ministry of justice.

He was arraigned in July 2021 after he was extradited from Kenya.
The trial Judge, Justice Murtala-Nyako had struck out eight out of the 15 counts after ruling on the preliminary objection filed by counsel to Mr Kanu challenging the legality of the charges.
Mister Kanu had challenged the decision of the trial court to uphold seven out of the 15 counts as his preliminary objection had sought the outright dismissal of the entire charge. The court of appeal had dismissed the charges against Mister Kanu on the ground that the Federal Government erred by extraordinarily renditioning him to Nigeria. The Supreme Court had overturned the judgment of the Court of Appeal.
The Apex Court held that the actions of the Federal Government cannot render the charges or the trial a nullity. The defendant was ordered to return to the Federal High Court to continue his trial where the court had initially stayed proceedings.

Meanwhile, The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday has adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu,  until 19 March.  Also, Mr Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, argued a fresh application for his client bail.

Indonesia stadium stampede leaves 125 dead

  At least 125 people died and 323 injured at an Indonesian football stadium when thousands of angry home fans invaded the pitch and police responded with tear gas that triggered a stampede, authorities said Sunday.  Arema FC supporters at the Kanjuruhan stadium marched onto the pitch after their team lost 3-2 to the visiting team and bitter rivals, Persebaya Surabaya. Officers fired tear gas in an attempt to disperse agitated supporters of the losing home side who had invaded the pitch after the final whistle in Malang, East Java, on Saturday night, the region’s police chief Nico Afinta told reporters. Many of the victims were trampled or choked to death, according to police.  Survivors described panicking spectators in a packed crowd as tear gas rained down on them. President Joko Widodo ordered an investigation into the tragedy, a safety review into all football matches and directed the country's football association to suspend all matches until "security improvements"

  Arsenal beat  Newcastle  4-1 in the Premier League on Saturday. It was the Gunners' sixth successive victory in the league. They have scored 25 goals and conceded just three in that run.
