Trump Mocks UN, Says Not Working For Peace

Image
During his September 2025 address to the United Nations General Assembly, U.S. President Donald Trump mocked the UN and accused it of not working for peace. He suggested the institution was full of "empty words" that do not solve wars and criticized it for not living up to its potential “The UN has such tremendous potential. I’ve always said it—it has such tremendous, tremendous potential. But it’s not even coming close to living up to it,” Trump said in an address in which he complained about a broken escalator at the New York headquarters. Trump stated that the UN "did not even try to help" resolve various conflicts, contrasting this with his own claims of brokering peace deals. He asked, "What is the purpose of the United Nations?". He repeated his assertions that his diplomatic efforts ended seven "unendable wars," including between India and Pakistan. He contrasted this with the UN's perceived failures, saying, "It's too bad tha...

Cédric Jubillar denies killing wife in case that captivated France

Image
Cédric Jubillar, 38, went on trial in France on September 22, 2025, accused of murdering his wife, Delphine, who disappeared in December 2020. He has denied the accusations, and his lawyers claim the investigation was prejudiced due to a lack of physical evidence. He denied causing any harm to his wife, Delphine, a nurse, whose body has never been found, in a mystery that has rarely been far from the headlines, almost five years after her disappearance in rural southern France. The trial, expected to last four weeks, got underway in front of a heavy media presence, with the defendant present in the glass-fronted dock dressed in a tracksuit top and jeans. “There are all the ingredients for this to be of interest to everyone,” said Alexandre Martin, one of Cedric Jubillar’s two lawyers, pointing to “a nurse who disappears in the middle of the Covid crisis… the mystery, the absence of a body”. For Delphine’s family members, the upcoming trial is generating “a lot of apprehension,” s...

Canada Rejects 1,596 Nigerian Asylum Claims

Image
Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board rejected 1,596 asylum claims from Nigerian nationals between January and August 2025, though the acceptance rate remained high at about 65% after accepting 2,292 claims out of 3,548 filed during that period. This trend of high demand and fluctuating acceptance rates is driven by economic instability and violence in Nigeria, with Ontario and Alberta hosting the largest claimant populations, and common reasons for rejection including irregular entry, poor documentation, and failure to meet the criteria for refugee status. Nigerians remain among the top asylum seekers in Canada, alongside citizens of Mexico, India, Haiti, and Colombia. Analysts link the trend to insecurity and economic hardship at home. Ontario and Alberta host the largest share of Nigerian claimants. Canada grants asylum only to applicants who meet UN refugee criteria, requiring proof of persecution risk or threats to life. Between 2013 and 2024, more than 13,000 Nigerian clai...
