Trump Mocks UN, Says Not Working For Peace
“The UN has such tremendous potential. I’ve always said it—it has such tremendous, tremendous potential. But it’s not even coming close to living up to it,” Trump said in an address in which he complained about a broken escalator at the New York headquarters.
Trump stated that the UN "did not even try to help" resolve various conflicts, contrasting this with his own claims of brokering peace deals. He asked, "What is the purpose of the United Nations?".
He repeated his assertions that his diplomatic efforts ended seven "unendable wars," including between India and Pakistan. He contrasted this with the UN's perceived failures, saying, "It's too bad that I had to do these things instead of the United Nations doing them".
In reference to the war between Israel and Hamas, Trump demanded that Hamas release all remaining hostages immediately. He also criticized countries that have formally recognized a Palestinian state, calling it a "reward for these horrible atrocities, including October 7".
Trump accused the UN of "funding an assault on Western countries and their borders" by providing aid to migrants, describing it as "totally unacceptable".
He demanded that European allies immediately cease all energy purchases from Russia, accusing China and India of funding the Ukraine war through their purchases.
Trump began his speech by complaining about a non-working teleprompter and a broken escalator at the UN headquarters, joking that the people responsible were "in big trouble". He also claimed the UN had rejected his earlier bid to renovate the building.
