Mohbad: IGP Grants Family Request for Renewed Police Investigation
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in Nigeria has now formally authorized a comprehensive investigation into the passing of beloved Afrobeats artist Ilerioluwa Aloba, known professionally as Mohbad.
This renewed investigative effort comes in response to a heartfelt petition submitted directly by the late artist's grieving family. The Special Enquiry Bureau received this petition and promptly shared it with the Lagos State Police Command for urgent attention, with family members already collaborating closely with the newly assigned investigative team.
The family's legal counsel emphasized that this official police investigation operates independently from a recent court proceeding.
On September 24, 2026, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled against a separate legal action (Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026) initiated by a civil rights organization, the Break the Silence Foundation.
Justice James Omotosho ruled against the organization's case, determining that the foundation lacked the necessary legal authority to bring the suit and had relied on assumptions rather than verified facts. Mohbad's family made clear that the unsuccessful lawsuit was pursued without their knowledge or approval, meaning it holds no connection to the IGP's newly sanctioned police investigation.
The Nigeria Police Force had previously examined the circumstances surrounding the death of Mohbad by establishing a specialized 13-member investigation unit within the Lagos State Police Command shortly following his death on September 12, 2023.
In response to significant public concern, law enforcement officials exhumed his remains for medical examination, conducted interviews with 26 individuals, and subsequently placed several important persons of interest in custody.
