Eriksen reports being in good spirits after collapse
Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is currently "in good spirits" and is making a positive recovery alongside his family following an on-field collapse that occurred on Sunday, June 7, 2026.
The 34-year-old midfielder from VfL Wolfsburg was observed clutching his chest with both hands before collapsing to the ground during the 65th minute of Denmark's international friendly match against Ukraine in Odense. Players from both teams swiftly formed a protective circle around him to ensure privacy while medical personnel provided assistance.
Eriksen briefly lost consciousness but quickly regained awareness and was able to walk off the pitch unaided. The match was subsequently called off.
According to Morten Boesen, the doctor for the Denmark national team, the Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) device—a type of pacemaker that Eriksen had implanted following his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020—"functioned precisely as intended" during this health incident.
Medical professionals explained to BBC News that the internal "shock box" identified a perilous heart rhythm irregularity and promptly delivered an electrical shock to restart his heart, enabling him to regain consciousness much more rapidly than during his previous collapse in 2021.
Eriksen was transported to Odense University Hospital for thorough diagnostic evaluations. Doctors have reported that he is doing well and is anticipated to be discharged soon to continue his recovery at home.
