'We share same ambition' - Alonso named Chelsea's third boss in year

Chelsea has appointed former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso as their new manager under a four-year contract, effective from July. The 44-year-old Spaniard became available after parting ways with Real Madrid by mutual agreement in January, having spent less than eight months on a three-year deal.

He previously managed Bayer Leverkusen for three years, where he guided the German club to their inaugural Bundesliga title in 2024, in addition to winning the German Cup. The announcement of Alonso's appointment follows Chelsea's defeat in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

The Blues are optimistic that he will provide the stability the club needs after experiencing two permanent managers this season - Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior - while Calum McFarlane continues his second term as interim manager, a position he will maintain for their last two Premier League matches.

• "Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club," said Alonso.
• "From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.
• "There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies."
