15 Money-Lending Companies Hit With Sanctions by Lagos Authorities

The Lagos State Government has penalized at least 15 money lending companies for breaching operational regulations and engaging in activities deemed harmful to the state's residents.

The State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ibrahim Layode, revealed this information during the 2026 Ministerial Press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, stating that this measure is part of the government's initiative to regulate the money lending industry and safeguard Lagosians from exploitation and fraudulent financial activities. Layode emphasized that the state government will persist in enforcing stringent compliance among money lenders operating in Lagos.

“The firms were sanctioned to ensure strict adherence to guidelines and to protect Lagosians from sharp practices by financial firms”. According to the commissioner, money lending remains a critical component of the economy because it provides quick access to credit for petty traders and small-scale business operators who often struggle to secure loans from commercial banks due to stringent conditions and requirements.
“Moneylending business is one of the vital parts of the economy which allows people in the small-scale industry and petty traders to have stress-free access to quick loans to finance their businesses”.

He clarified that the Ministry of Home Affairs is tasked with processing applications, issuing and renewing licenses for money lenders operating within the state, as well as monitoring and overseeing their operations.
