"No reply required" — Emmanuel Macron responds to Donald Trump regarding his marriage remark

French President Emmanuel Macron dismissed mocking comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump about his marriage, stating they did "not merit a response" and were "neither elegant nor up to standard."

The friction escalated following a private lunch in Washington on April1,2026, where Trump criticized NATO allies for not joining U.S.-led operations against Iran. Mimicking a French accent, Trump claimed Brigitte Macron "treats [Emmanuel] extremely badly" and joked that the French President was still "recovering from the right to the jaw," referencing a viral video from May2025.

This personal attack occurred amid broader diplomatic tensions, with Trump branding NATO a "paper tiger." Speaking in Seoul on April2,2026, Macron chose to focus on global stability, stating, "I am not going to respond to them—they do not merit a response," and criticized the current state of diplomatic discourse, urging a return to "stability, calm, and peace."

Macron emphasized that world leaders should prioritize de-escalation in the Middle East over personal "jibes." The exchange has been widely reported by major outlets like The Guardian, France24, and Le Monde.
