Nigeria: Catholic priests protest mass murder in southern communities

On Thursday, February 12, 2026, Catholic priests and faithful from the Dioceses of Wukari and Jalingo staged a massive "solidarity walk" in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, to protest ongoing mass killings in southern communities.

Key Details of the Protest

Targeted Areas: The clergy highlighted sustained attacks in the Takum, Donga, and Ussa Local Government Areas (LGAs), particularly in the Chanchanji Ward.

Protesters condemned the recent deaths of over 80 people within 90 days. Reports indicate that thousands have been displaced, and rural parishes have been abandoned due to the violence. Carrying placards, the priests called for:

The immediate deployment of professional, neutral security personnel to the affected regions.

The arrest and prosecution of perpetrators.

Urgent humanitarian aid for internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Church leaders warned that if the Nigerian government fails to guarantee the safety of its citizens, they may be forced to seek intervention from the international community.

The Diocese of Wukari has characterized the situation as a "hidden genocide" perpetrated by armed militias. Internal church records suggest that since 2015, over 335 Catholic churches have been destroyed and more than 300,000 faithful displaced in the region.

Tensions have recently escalated following reports of attacks on the Takum-Wukari Road, prompting Governor Agbu Kefas to convene emergency security meetings.

Meanwhile, at the The Sunday Angelus, a traditional Catholic devotion, Pope Leo XIV expresses distress over the latest wave of deadly attacks in Nigeria, which have claimed dozens of lives, and signifies that authorities will "continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen."
