US launches 'powerful strikes' against Islamic State in Nigeria, says Trump

On Christmas Day, December 25, 2025, the United States launched what President Donald Trump described as "powerful and deadly strikes" against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in northwestern Nigeria.

The strikes primarily targeted two ISIS camps in the Sokoto State of northwest Nigeria, near the border with Niger.

A U.S. military official reported that more than a dozen Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired from a Navy ship stationed in the Gulf of Guinea.

The US military’s Africa Command (AFRICOM), which is responsible for operations in Africa, said in a post on X that the air strike was carried out “at the request of Nigerian authorities” and had killed “multiple ISIS terrorists”.

“Grateful for Nigerian government support & cooperation,” US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth wrote on social media, warning also of “more to come”, without providing details.

Reasoning Provided: President Trump stated the strikes were in retaliation for the "vicious killing" of innocent Christians by ISIS "scum". Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed this, stating that the killing of Christians in Nigeria must end.

AFRICOM's initial assessment indicated that multiple ISIS terrorists were killed. There were no immediate reports of civilian casualties, though some security analysts expressed doubt about the long-term impact on the region's complex insurgency.

Recent Military Context

This operation followed a series of aggressive U.S. military actions in late 2025 under the Trump administration:

Syria (Dec 19, 2025): The U.S. launched large-scale airstrikes against approximately 70 ISIS targets in Syria as retaliation for the deaths of two U.S. soldiers and a civilian interpreter.

Somalia (Dec 17, 2025): The U.S. dramatically escalated strikes against Al-Shabaab and ISIS-Somalia targets earlier in the month.

Yemen (March–May 2025): The U.S. conducted Operation Rough Rider, featuring over 1,000 airstrikes against Houthi targets.

Iran (June 2025): In Operation Midnight Hammer, the U.S. attacked three Iranian nuclear facilities.
