Why did Iran send missiles to the UAE?

In early March 2026, Iran launched a large-scale missile and drone campaign—titled "Operation Truthful Promise IV"—targeting the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other Gulf states.

This was a direct retaliation for a massive joint U.S.-Israeli military operation, known as "Operation Epic Fury," which targeted Iranian leadership and infrastructure.

Key Reasons for the Attacks

Retaliation for U.S.-Israeli Strikes: Tehran launched the assault following the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top officials during U.S. and Israeli air strikes on February 28, 2026.

Targeting U.S. Military Assets: Iran officially claimed that any state hosting U.S. military bases is a "legitimate target". The UAE hosts approximately 3,500 U.S. personnel, primarily at the Al Dhafra Air Base in Abu Dhabi.

Strategic Signalling: Experts suggest Iran aimed to increase the cost of the war by "sucking the rest of the Gulf in". By striking the UAE, Iran intended to pressure Gulf nations to distance themselves from Washington and undermine their normalization of relations with Israel.

Economic Disruption: The strikes targeted civilian and economic infrastructure, including Dubai International Airport and landmarks like the Fairmont The Palm hotel, to shatter the UAE’s image as a safe global hub for tourism and finance.

Impact on the UAE

Defense Performance: The UAE Ministry of Defense reported intercepting a vast majority of the threats—over 130 missiles and 200 drones—using advanced systems like THAAD and Patriot.

Casualties and Damage: Despite the interceptions, debris and direct hits caused at least one death in Abu Dhabi and injuries at major airports.

Diplomatic Fallout: In response to the aggression, the UAE government withdrew its ambassador and all diplomatic staff from Iran on March 1, 2026.

These opinion pieces analyze the strategic motivations behind Iran's missile attacks on the UAE, including retaliation for U.S.-Israeli strikes and efforts to disrupt regional normalization with Israel.
