Sidney Dorsey, ex-DeKalb sheriff , dies in prison

 

Sidney Dorsey, the former DeKalb County Sheriff, died in prison on Monday night, March 2, 2026.

He was 86 years old and died of natural causes at the Augusta State Medical Prison.

The Conviction: Dorsey was serving a life sentence for orchestrating the December 2000 assassination of Sheriff-elect Derwin Brown.

The Case: Brown was killed outside his home just days before he was to take office, having defeated Dorsey in a runoff on a platform to end department corruption. Dorsey eventually admitted to ordering the hit in a 2007 interview from prison.
