Nigeria: Lagos issues quit notice to occupants under high-tension lines

The Lagos State Government, through the LASBCA and other agencies, has issued quit notices to occupants of structures built under high-tension power lines, particularly in areas like Alagbado/Oke-Odo. This directive aims to mitigate risks of electrocution and fires, with affected residents warned to vacate immediately or face forced demolition.

This initiative is part of a broader, ongoing enforcement action against illegal structures and encroachments across the state.

Key Details of the Directive:

Targeted Areas: Various parts of the state, with specific actions in Alagbado/Oke-Odo and surrounding areas.

Reasoning: The structures violate urban safety, environmental sustainability, and the designated Right-of-Way (RoW) for high-tension cables, which pose serious health and safety threats.

Action Taken: Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has marked buildings for removal and advised owners to relocate to safer locations.

Consequences: Failure to comply will lead to demolition, with authorities stressing that the safety of lives and property is the top priority.

In Lagos there are many houses and informal settlements built under or very close to high-tension electricity transmission lines. This happens mainly in densely populated or low-income areas where land is scarce and expensive.
