Meloni denounces the 'massacre' of schoolgirls in Iran
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni issued a firm condemnation on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, regarding a deadly missile strike on a girls' school in Minab, southern Iran, which she described as a "massacre".
Iranian authorities reported approximately 165 deaths, the majority of whom were girls aged 7 to 12. The strike occurred during the onset of intensified military actions in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Speaking before the Italian Senate, Meloni expressed solidarity with the victims' families and demanded a swift investigation to identify those responsible. "On behalf of the government, I express my firm condemnation of the massacre of girls at the school in Minab"
She emphasized that civilian safety, particularly that of children, must be preserved and that responsibilities for the tragedy must be "swiftly ascertained".
As of March 12, 2026, there is no international consensus on the perpetrator of the strike.
Iranian officials have accused the United States and Israel of conducting the strike during operations aimed at neutralizing Iranian military capabilities.
U.S. President Donald Trump blamed Tehran for the incident, while Israel denied any involvement. A New York Times investigation indicated the school may have been hit during U.S. strikes targeting a nearby naval base.
