Nigeria: UN, US, condemn Kwara attack as Türkiye pledges support to fight terrorism

On February 3, 2026, a devastating terrorist attack struck the Woro and Nuku communities in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria.

Gunmen, identified by officials as either Boko Haram or the Islamic State-affiliated Lakurawa group, massacred at least 170 people and abducted dozens after residents reportedly rejected demands to adopt extremist ideologies.

United Nations: Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the "heinous" attack and reaffirmed the UN's unwavering solidarity with Nigeria in its fight against terrorism. In an X post, Antonio Guterres said, “I strongly condemn the terrorist attack of 3 February in Kwara State, Nigeria. “My heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims & to the people & government of Nigeria. I wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria described the massacre as "horrific" and "senseless violence." We express our deepest condolences to the families of those affected by this senseless violence. We welcome President Tinubu’s order to deploy security forces to protect villages in the area and his directive to federal and state officials to provide aid to the community and bring the perpetrators of this atrocity to justice.”

Alsothe Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep sadness and pledged that Türkiye will continue to support Nigeria in its counter-terrorism efforts.

“We strongly condemn this heinous attack and extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to the people of Nigeria. Türkiye will continue to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism,” its Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, condemned the "barbaric act" and reiterated the AU's zero-tolerance policy for terrorism.

Nigerian Government Response

Operation Savannah Shield: President Tinubu ordered the immediate deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama and authorized a new military command to secure the area.

Police Deployment: The Inspector-General of Police directed tactical and intelligence assets to the state to track down the perpetrators.

Local Action: Kwara Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq labeled the incident a "massacre" and confirmed that victims were being buried in mass graves while security forces remained on high alert.
