FG announces 24-hour closure of Third Mainland Bridge

  The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Works has announced that the Iyana Oworonshoki to Lagos end of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos will be closed to motorists for 24 hours beginning from midnight on Sunday, February 18, 2024. A late Saturday statement by the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, says traffic will resume on the axis of the bridge on Monday midnight. The statement however added that motorists coming out of the Island and heading towards Oworonshoki will have full access throughout the 24 hours closure. Video link https://youtu.be/CEgR1xBO8M0

Xabi Alonso: The Standout New Generation Manager, Praised by Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp

  Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says Xabi Alonso is a "standout" of the new generation of football managers. Alonso has been heavily linked with the job at Anfield since Klopp, 56, announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. Court Orders AGF to Reopen Prosecution of Dele Giwa’s Killers

  Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court Abuja has ordered the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to re-open the investigation and prosecution of those who murdered the founder of Newswatch Magazine, Dele Giwa, in 1986. Delivering judgment, Justice Ekwo held the AGF was under obligation to prosecute and penalize killers of media practitioners in the country. Mister Dele Giwa was murdered on October 19, 1986, in his Lagos office through a letter bomb. Apart from Dele Giwa, the court ordered that the killings of other journalists in the discharge of their lawful duties must be investigated and perpetrators brought to book in line with the provisions of the law. Justice Ekwo also ordered the Federal Government to ensure adequate protection and safety of the lives of journalists as enshrined in sections 33, 39 of the Constitution and Articles 4 and 9 of the African Charters on Human and Peoples Rights. FG can’t continue to subsidise electricity — Power Minister

  Adebayo Adelabu The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, says Nigeria cannot continue to subsidise electricity, adding that the nation must begin to move towards a cost-effective tariff model, as the country is currently indebted to the tune of N1.3 trillion to generating companies (GenCos) and $1.3 billion owed gas companies. Adelabu addressed a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday and said only 450 billion naira was budgeted for subsidy this year but the ministry needs over N2 trillion for it. He said state governments will now be allowed to generate power independently to supply power to their states.   The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has announced that the excessive heat being experienced in the country presently would remain so for a while. President Bola Tinubu has awarded the Super Eagles team the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) national honour for their impressive display at the just concluded AFCON 2023 tournament held in Ivory Coast. They were also given one flat each and a plot of land in the FCT Nigeria came in second place, losing the trophy to the hosts Ivory Coast who were the eventual winners. The Nigerian team were received at the State House on Tuesday where they were conferred with the titles. Access Holdings names Bolaji Agbede acting CEO following Herbert Wigwe's death

  Access Holdings Plc has appointed Bolaji Agbede as the Acting Group Chief Executive Officer following the death of Herbert Wigwe. Wigwe, who was the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, died in a helicopter crash in the US over the weekend alongside his wife, son, and a former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Abimbola Ogunbanjo.
